Since it was founded in the late 60s, the bar Le Suffren has become an emblem of Clermont-Ferrand’s social life. Nestled in the heart of the Place de Jaude, this establishment has survived the decades by retaining its charm and authenticity.
In 1990, marking an important step in its development, the owner decided to expand the bar by buying the premises next door, thus doubling its surface area. This expansion has enabled us to meet the growing demand from regulars and consolidate our position as the must-visit morning café.
The Suffren also wrote its name into French cinema history, becoming the location for the famous film “Ma Nuit chez Maud“. This moment added a further dimension to the already well-established reputation of this establishment.
Throughout its history, the Suffren has been open every day, providing a place for Clermont-Ferrand residents to meet and relax. In 1998, after years of management, the bar changed hands to Mr. and Mrs. Astorgue. Their son William joined the family adventure at the end of 2001, breathing new life into this place steeped in history.
In 2006, faced with changes in the city, the bar took a bold decision: to undertake major renovations to adapt to the new Place de Jaude and the arrival of the tramway.
This transformation marks a new era for the Suffren, which joins the Garden Ice Café group, while preserving its unique character and warm ambience.
And in April 2024, after all these changes, the bar decided to return to its roots by reverting to its original name, the Suffren. This return to the past symbolizes the company’s determination to remain faithful to its heritage while continuing to write its own history.
Today, the Suffren continues to be an essential gathering place for the people of Clermont-Ferrand, where history blends with conviviality in a unique and authentic setting. Whether it’s for a morning coffee with friends or a relaxing evening get-together, the Suffren remains a place full of emotions and memories for all those who pass through its doors.
